I’m obsessed with that midcentury modern style, as you will no doubt see when I post pictures of our latest house that we built. What is midcentury modern you ask? Well it’s a design style that is reminiscent of the early 20th century (1930’s to 1965) – clean lines, sleek, modern, and absolutely fabulous in my opinion.
When we built and moved into our house two houses ago (I think I might need to start numbering the houses we’ve lived in to make these blog posts easier – I think that was house #7??), I asked my husband if we could use his family’s old 1970’s couches that were stuffed in an upstairs gameroom at his old childhood home and not being used. He thought I was straight up CRAZY. They had 1970’s brown on brown on tan flame stitched fabric on them and he thought they were so ugly; but I was all – “BUT WOULD YOU LOOK AT THOSE CLEAN LINES?” I saw potential. We used the couches in our theatre room in that house (I think it was house #7 or 8 for awhile) then when we were building our current house, I started making plans to recover the couches for our living room. Again, he thought I was all kinds of crazy. Here’s pretty much how that conversation went:
Mike Miller – “What?!? You are recovering our 70’s couches that I had growing up and using them in our brand new house? I’m sorry come again…did you say with CHOCOLATE BROWN VELVET??”
ME – “Yep. I sure am. Just trust me.”
So I enlisted the help of my design talented sister to help me with fabrics because she is amazing at fabrics among many other things, and she helped me select a gorgeous chocolate velvet. I am so thrilled with how they turned out and paired with these crushed velvet navy chairs, leopard pillows from Little Design Co, and other thrift store finds like a 10×14 Persian rug, a coffee table from Mockingbird Manor in OKC, and some second hand Drexel tables I painted white…the final look is midcentury modern eclectic glam. Or at least that’s what I call it! So here is what a midcentury modern sofa looks like in a living room design. If you’ve had your eye on this style, I picked out some midcentury modern sofas that you can purchase new from a price range of only ($400 all the way up to $2000). Go ahead. Get your midcentury style on. You won’t regret it!
PS – Pair these couches with some Little Design Co love and you will not regret it!
